In every state where I have lived, folks have told the same story. Either during or immediately after the Civil War, two old ladies were visiting a cemetery in that state, and one said to the other, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a day to remember the men who gave their lives?”
Who knows how Memorial Day really started, but within a few years of our bloodiest war, every state had a day set aside to remember the war dead. They were different days of the year and depended on when flowers grew locally. In the early 1970s, the Nixon administration created several Monday holidays, so for the first time there was a national Memorial Day - the last Monday in May.

TALLAHASSEE - Florida TaxWatch applauds the Legislature for including key economic stimulus components in the proposed fiscal year 2009 budget. Last week, the legislative stimulus package - which originated from within the business community and was supported by Governor Charlie Crist and many in the Legislature - was shown to be an important priority to help Florida’s economy by an independent economic analysis by the Florida Council of Economic Advisors at Florida TaxWatch.
One way to increase gas mileage it to be sure your tires are properly inflated, and a new survey says 85% of American drivers don’t know how to properly inflate their tires. The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), which commissioned the survey, is sponsoring the seventh annual National Tire Safety Week April 20-26 to help raise awareness about the importance of tire care. With gas prices at record levels again this year, motorists can save time and money by taking five minutes every month to check tires. The Association produced this video to show the importance of tire inflation.
A Jacksonville Beach woman is in jail charged with arson and attempted murder. Police say Melissa Armer tried to burn down her boyfriend’s house on 16th Avenue South while he was asleep inside.
Governor Charlie Crist signed into law a bill that would allow gun owners to keep their guns in their cars in most places, including at work an in shopping center parking lots. The gun owner must have a concealed carry permit and keep the gun locked in the car.
Gun owners say they have a right to protect themselves - business owners say they have a right to control conduct on their property. They are threatening to sue.
